PCB printed circuit board layer meaning


What are the layers of PCB printed circuit board and what are the meanings and functions of each layer? The following is for your reference:


  


1.Signal layer


The signal layer is mainly used to arrange the wires on the printed circuit board. Protel 99SE provides 32 signal layers, including Top layer, Bottom layer and 30 MidLayer(middle layer).


 


2.Internal plane layer (internal power/ground plane)


 


The Protel 99SE offers 16 internal power/ground planes. This type of layer is used only for multilayer boards and is primarily used to lay out power and ground wires. We refer to double-layer boards, four-layer boards, and six-layer boards, and generally refer to the signal layer and the number of internal power/ground layers.


 


3.Mechanical layer


Protel99SE provides 16 mechanical layers, which are generally used to set the circuit board's external dimensions, data marks, alignment marks, assembly instructions, and other mechanical information. This information varies according to the requirements of the design company or PCB manufacturer. Execute the menu command Design|Mechanical Layer to set more mechanical layers for printed circuit boards. In addition, the mechanical layer can be attached to other layers for output display.


 


4. Solder mask layer


A layer of paint, such as a solder mask, is applied to all parts other than the pad to prevent tin from being applied to these parts. Solder masks are used to match pads during the design process and are automatically generated. Protel 99SE provides Top Solder (top layer) and Bottom Solder (bottom layer) solder masks.


 


5.Paste mask layer


It functions similarly to the solder mask, except that the corresponding surface mount component pads are soldered during machine soldering. Protel 99SE provides Top Paste (top layer) and Bottom Paste (bottom layer) two solder mask layers.
